When Q-TAN Luxury Tanning Salon approached Audioserv to design and install a professional sound system for their newly refurbished salon, we knew this was going to be something a little different.
Most people probably wouldn't associate a tanning salon with a nightclub-quality sound system, but Q-TAN wanted to create an experience that went beyond the usual expectations.
The salon, located in Crook, County Durham, had undergone an extensive refurbishment, bringing together modern interior design, impressive lighting and some of the latest tanning technology.
The finishing touch was a professional audio system that looked every bit as impressive as it sounded.
With its distinctive loudspeaker designs and excellent sound quality, Void Acoustics was an ideal choice for the project.
Our team designed and installed a complete audio system that complemented the salon's contemporary appearance while delivering powerful, high-quality sound throughout the reception and entrance areas.
Designing a Professional Sound System for Q-TAN
One of the main requirements was to create a consistent listening experience as customers entered the salon and walked through to the reception area.
The system needed to provide excellent sound quality without introducing noticeable changes in volume or clarity between the different spaces.
Appearance was equally important.
With the salon's modern interior design, the client wanted loudspeakers that would become part of the overall visual experience rather than simply being equipment mounted on the walls.
This made Void Acoustics an excellent choice.
The manufacturer's distinctive loudspeaker designs are well suited to installations where visual appearance is just as important as audio performance.
For Q-TAN, we selected a combination of Airten V3 loudspeakers, Cyclone 55 speakers and a Venu 212 subwoofer.
Together, they provided the performance and coverage required while complementing the salon's striking interior.
Void Acoustics Airten V3 Installation
The centrepiece of the installation was a pair of Void Acoustics Airten V3 loudspeakers.
These distinctive speakers were installed in the main reception area, where their unusual circular design became a prominent feature.
The Airten V3 combines impressive acoustic performance with an appearance that is immediately recognisable.
For a venue such as Q-TAN, where the interior design plays an important role in the overall customer experience, this was particularly valuable.
Rather than trying to hide the loudspeakers, we positioned them to complement the room and make the most of their distinctive design.
The Airten V3 loudspeakers provided the main audio coverage for the reception area, delivering detailed, powerful sound suited to both background music and more energetic performances.

Void Acoustics Cyclone 55 Entrance Speakers
While the Airten V3 loudspeakers provided the main reception audio, we also needed suitable coverage for the salon's entrance.
For this area, we selected a pair of Void Acoustics Cyclone 55 loudspeakers.
These compact professional speakers allowed us to extend the audio coverage towards the entrance without introducing unnecessarily large equipment into the space.
However, simply adding more speakers isn't always enough to achieve good sound quality.
When loudspeakers are positioned in different areas of a building, their audio signals can arrive at slightly different times.
This can cause problems when customers move between areas where multiple speakers are audible.
To overcome this, we carefully time-aligned the Cyclone 55 loudspeakers with the main reception system.
By applying the appropriate delays during system configuration, we created a more consistent listening experience between the entrance and reception.
The result was a sound system designed to provide smooth audio coverage from the moment customers entered the salon.

Powerful Bass with Void Acoustics Venu 212
To complement the main loudspeakers, we installed a Void Acoustics Venu 212 subwoofer.
The subwoofer provided the low-frequency performance needed to give the system a full, balanced sound.
This was particularly important because the client wanted the flexibility to use the system for more than everyday background music.
Having a dedicated subwoofer allowed us to achieve the required low-frequency performance without relying entirely on the main loudspeakers.
The combination of Airten V3 loudspeakers and Venu 212 subwoofer provided a powerful system that was well suited to the reception area's requirements.
Powersoft Amplification and Audio Control
Another challenge was finding enough room for the system's amplification and control equipment.
Space was at a premium in the office area where the equipment needed to be installed.
Fortunately, the selected system could be powered using a single Powersoft Bias Q2 amplifier.
This provided the required amplification without the need for a large equipment rack.
For everyday operation, we also incorporated a Powersoft WM Touch controller.
The system was integrated into the salon's network, allowing staff to manage the audio using wireless connectivity.
This made the finished installation straightforward to operate without requiring staff to understand the technical details behind the system.
For commercial venues, we believe this is an important part of any professional installation.
A sound system should deliver excellent audio quality while remaining practical and easy to use every day.
More Than Just Background Music
One of the things that made the Q-TAN installation particularly interesting was the way the client intended to use the system.
Although most tanning salons use relatively simple background music systems, Q-TAN wanted something considerably more impressive.
The reception area was designed to accommodate occasional DJ performances, bringing a nightclub-style atmosphere into an environment where you might not normally expect it.
Well-known DJs have performed in the salon's reception area, making full use of the Void Acoustics sound system.
This meant the installation needed to provide considerably more performance than a conventional background music system.
By selecting professional audio equipment from the outset, we were able to design a system that accommodated both everyday listening and more demanding entertainment requirements.

Customer Feedback from Q-TAN
One of the most rewarding parts of any installation is hearing how the finished system performs once the customer begins using it.
Following the installation, Andrew Smith, owner of Q-TAN, was extremely pleased with the result.
Andrew explained that the salon wanted a sound system that looked as good as it sounded, with Void Acoustics being one of their preferred choices from the beginning.
He was particularly pleased with the appearance and performance of the Airten loudspeakers.
Andrew commented:
"We've had so many comments from customers about the way the system looks and sounds, especially the Airten's!"
He also praised the professionalism of the Audioserv installation team and explained how much the staff enjoyed having a high-quality sound system in their workplace.
It's always good to receive feedback like this, particularly on a project where both the appearance and acoustic performance were so important.

The Q-TAN installation also attracted the attention of Void Acoustics, which published its own case study about the project.
The manufacturer's article highlights the unusual application of its professional audio equipment, the installation challenges and the way the finished system complements the salon's contemporary design.
Since the original installation, Audioserv and Q-TAN have also worked together to expand the sound system, adding an additional Void Acoustics Venu 212 V2 subwoofer and Bias Q1 amplifier.
It's a great example of how a carefully designed professional audio installation can be developed as a customer's requirements change.

A Professional Audio System Designed Around the Customer
The Q-TAN project demonstrates that professional sound system installations aren't limited to nightclubs, bars and live music venues.
Businesses from many different sectors can benefit from high-quality audio, particularly when music forms an important part of the atmosphere they want to create.
For Q-TAN, the combination of Void Acoustics loudspeakers, Powersoft amplification and carefully configured audio processing helped create an installation that complemented the salon's distinctive appearance.
From the initial equipment selection through to speaker positioning, time alignment and system control, every element was designed around the client's requirements.
