Audioserv has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Roxy Ballroom and Roxy Lanes, designing and installing professional sound systems across their growing collection of entertainment venues throughout the UK.
Having worked with Roxy Leisure since 2013, we've developed a good understanding of what their venues need from a sound system.
From busy cocktail bars and bowling alleys to pool tables, shuffleboard areas and other entertainment spaces, every Roxy venue presents a slightly different challenge.
Although the buildings and layouts vary, the overall requirements remain much the same: excellent sound quality, consistent coverage throughout the venue and a system that can deliver everything from background music to a lively evening atmosphere.
Our role is to design and install audio systems that meet these requirements while working around the practical challenges of each building.
Designing Professional Sound Systems for Roxy Venues
One of the most important aspects of designing audio systems for Roxy Ballroom and Roxy Lanes is achieving consistent sound coverage.
These venues typically contain several different entertainment areas, often spread across multiple floors.
The challenge is ensuring that customers enjoy good sound quality wherever they are, without encountering areas that are excessively loud or noticeably quieter than others.
We design the systems to provide relatively even coverage throughout the venue, with additional emphasis on the main bar areas where greater sound levels are often required.
This involves selecting suitable loudspeakers for each location and carefully planning their positions before installation.
Rather than simply installing speakers wherever space is available, we consider how each loudspeaker interacts with those around it.
The result is a sound system designed specifically for the venue and the way customers use it.

Time Alignment for Consistent Audio Coverage
One of the most important technical considerations in our Roxy installations is loudspeaker time alignment.
When multiple loudspeakers are installed throughout a large venue, sound from different speakers can reach listeners at slightly different times.
If these differences aren't properly managed, the result can be reduced clarity and an inconsistent listening experience.
This is particularly noticeable in large, open entertainment spaces where several loudspeakers may be audible from the same position.
To overcome this, we carefully configure the audio processing so the different loudspeaker positions work together.
By applying the appropriate delays, we can help create the impression of a coherent sound source rather than several independent speakers competing with each other.
The aim is to make the transition between different areas as natural as possible.
This approach is particularly valuable in Roxy venues, where customers regularly move between bars, bowling lanes and other entertainment areas.
Professional Audio Equipment for Roxy Lanes
Over the years, we've worked with a range of professional audio manufacturers to provide systems suited to the individual Roxy venues.
A good example is our installation at Roxy Lanes in The Light, Leeds.
This venue presented several challenges, with bowling lanes, bars and gaming areas distributed across two floors.
For this particular installation, we selected equipment from AUDAC, Powersoft and Symetrix.
The system incorporated a range of AUDAC loudspeakers, including VEXO, ATEO and BASO models, allowing us to provide suitable coverage for the different entertainment areas.
Powersoft Quattrocanali amplifiers provided the amplification, while a Symetrix Prism digital signal processor handled the audio processing and system control.
The combination gave us the flexibility to configure the sound system around the building's layout and provide the venue with practical control over its different audio zones.
Using professional digital processing also allowed us to configure the loudspeaker timing and audio levels to suit the various spaces.

Bespoke Subwoofer Installation and Mounting
Subwoofer placement is another important consideration when designing sound systems for busy entertainment venues.
Low-frequency reproduction is essential for creating a full, enjoyable listening experience, particularly in the main bar and entertainment areas.
However, floor space is often extremely limited.
Every square metre of a Roxy venue needs to be used effectively, whether that's for seating, gaming equipment or customer circulation.
Large subwoofers positioned on the floor aren't always practical.
Where appropriate, we design installations that allow subwoofers to be safely suspended above the floor.
This approach can provide several advantages.
It keeps valuable floor space clear, protects equipment from accidental damage and can offer additional flexibility when configuring the time alignment of the sound system.
Of course, suspending heavy loudspeakers requires suitable structural support and correctly designed mounting hardware.
Our experience in engineering and bespoke steel fabrication allows us to develop practical mounting solutions when conventional installation methods aren't suitable.
This is particularly useful when working in existing buildings where the available mounting positions may be limited.
Managing Noise Transmission Between Properties
Some of the newer Roxy venues present additional challenges because they share walls, floors or ceilings with neighbouring properties.
In these situations, sound isolation becomes an important part of the installation design.
Bowling alleys naturally generate a considerable amount of impact noise, particularly when bowling balls strike the lanes.
However, the installed sound system can also contribute to noise transmission through the building structure.
Low-frequency sound is especially important to consider because vibrations can travel through structural elements and potentially affect neighbouring businesses or residents.
Where required, we work closely with the building contractors to ensure loudspeakers are installed using suitable isolation methods.
These measures help reduce the transmission of vibration from the loudspeakers into the surrounding structure.
It's important that this work is considered during the initial installation rather than after the venue has opened.
Addressing potential problems during construction makes it easier to incorporate appropriate mounting and isolation solutions without disrupting the finished venue.

Working Alongside Venue Construction Teams
Professional audio installation is only one part of developing a new entertainment venue.
At Roxy, our work needs to fit around the schedules of building contractors, electricians, interior designers and other specialist trades.
Good communication between everyone involved is essential.
We work closely with the site team to ensure that speaker mounting positions, cable routes and equipment locations are agreed upon and prepared at the appropriate stages of construction.
This is particularly important when installing isolation mounts or bespoke structural hardware.
Leaving these decisions until later in the project can create unnecessary complications and delays.
By coordinating our installation work with the wider construction schedule, we can help ensure that the sound system is completed and commissioned in time for the venue's opening.
Reliable Sound Systems for Busy Hospitality Venues
A sound system in a busy bar or entertainment venue needs to do more than simply sound good.
It also needs to be reliable, straightforward to operate and flexible enough to accommodate the venue's different requirements.
Throughout the day, music may be played at relatively modest levels while customers enjoy food, drinks and games.
Later in the evening, the same system may need to deliver considerably more impact as the atmosphere becomes livelier.
Our sound system designs take these changing requirements into account.
Professional audio processing allows us to configure individual zones and provide appropriate control for venue staff.
This means the system can deliver the performance required without making everyday operation unnecessarily complicated.

We also understand the importance of ongoing maintenance and technical support.
Commercial sound systems are often used for long periods every day, so keeping them operating reliably is essential.
