Doncaster Sheffield Airport has been at the centre of considerable interest following its closure in 2022, with ongoing efforts to bring aviation and passenger services back to the region.
Audioserv was delighted to be involved in a high-profile conference held inside a 2Excel Aviation aircraft hangar at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, supporting discussions surrounding the airport's future and plans for its reopening.
With a number of important guests and decision-makers attending, this was a significant event requiring a professional and reliable audio-visual setup. Security was also an important consideration, making careful preparation and coordination essential.
Our team was asked to provide the conference sound system, microphones and projection equipment, ensuring presentations could be seen and heard clearly throughout the large hangar.
Overcoming the Acoustic Challenges of an Aircraft Hangar
One of the biggest challenges with this particular conference was the venue itself.
Aircraft hangars are certainly impressive spaces for hosting events, but they're not necessarily designed with speech intelligibility in mind.
With incredibly high ceilings, large open areas and extensive hard surfaces, controlling sound reflections can be challenging. For a conference where speeches and presentations are the main focus, achieving clear, intelligible audio is particularly important.
We decided that our RCF column speaker systems would be an excellent solution for this environment.
Column speakers offer a more controlled vertical sound dispersion compared with many conventional loudspeaker designs. This allowed us to focus more of the sound towards the audience while reducing unwanted reflections from the hangar's high ceiling and hard floor.
The result was a much more controlled listening environment, helping to ensure that speeches and presentations remained clear throughout the conference.
Four RCF Column Speakers for Consistent Sound Coverage
For the main sound system, we supplied four professional RCF column speakers.
Two speakers were positioned at the front of the presentation area, providing the main sound reinforcement for the conference.
The remaining two speakers were configured as delay speakers, allowing us to extend coverage further into the audience area without simply increasing the volume of the front speakers.
This distributed approach was particularly beneficial given the size and layout of the hangar.
By positioning the speakers carefully and managing the timing between the main and delay systems, we were able to provide more consistent sound coverage across the listening area.
It was a practical solution that worked extremely well in what could otherwise have been a difficult acoustic environment.
Allen & Heath SQ7 Digital Mixing and Sennheiser Radio Microphones
At the heart of the conference audio system was our Allen & Heath SQ7 digital mixing console.
The SQ7 provided the control and flexibility needed to manage the audio throughout the event, allowing our engineers to make adjustments as required and maintain consistent sound quality.
For the conference speakers and presentations, we supplied Sennheiser Evolution G4 wireless microphone systems.
Reliable wireless microphones are particularly important for corporate conferences, especially when presenters need the freedom to move around the presentation area without being restricted by cables.
Together, the Allen & Heath mixing desk, Sennheiser microphones and RCF column speakers provided a dependable professional audio system for this important event.
Large-Screen Projection in a Naturally Lit Hangar
Alongside the conference sound system, Audioserv was responsible for providing the main presentation display.
The hangar featured an extensive number of large windows, allowing considerable amounts of natural daylight into the building.
While this created a bright and impressive environment for the conference, it also presented a challenge when selecting suitable projection equipment.
To ensure presentation slides remained clearly visible, we supplied a Panasonic 6,000-lumen laser projector, paired with a 3m Fast-Fold rear projection screen.
The Panasonic projector provided the brightness needed to cope with the naturally lit space, delivering clear images and presentation content throughout the event.
Using a rear projection configuration also allowed us to position the projection equipment behind the screen, helping to keep the main presentation area clear and professional.
The combination worked extremely well, providing a large, easily visible display for delegates seated throughout the hangar.
